What is a MUD? Municiple Utility District. Quite a few north east Austin communities and Round Rock are a part of a MUD. In a way it’s an association that organizes the utilities in that neighborhood. Similar to an home owners association, a board is created to oversee how utilities are provided and an extra fund is collected to maintain the board. This extra fund is collected via property taxes.
However, the Wells Branch MUD is organized a bit different. They have taken the idea of a MUD and expanded it to include services that would normally be regulated strictly to an Home Owner’s Association. Therefore several amenities are provided through the organized MUD, not just utilities. Amenities such as park maintenance, a club house, a fitness center and neighborhood events, are provided through the Wells Branch MUD. This helps distinguish this community from other north Austin communities and provides a sense of community in addition to amenities.
