The coffee shop will remain open during Austin’s largest art festival, SXSW. During the week of SXSW they will host many parties and events, giving fans and patrons of the cafe a chance to have one last hoorah at the loved East 5th street location. But both Jessica Nieri and Hans Dietrich, Cafe Mundi’s owners, assure their patrons that this will not be the end of Cafe Mundi, just a new beginning. Owner’s recently told The Austinist that “[they] do not see this as an end, but as a new beginning.”

Cafe Mundi isn’t just a coffee shop. It’s a huge part of the culture and arts community of East Austin. Many east side events, such as the East Austin Studio Tour and east side farmer’s market, are promoted and supported by Cafe Mundi. So where will the new Cafe Mundi call home, we will all have to wait and see. In the meantime soak in the last remaining days of the popular East 5th street location.

Right now they are purchasing supplies to take over to Haiti, they have set up a paypal account to accept donations to help with the purchase of these supplies.

But as I left my office on Spicewood Springs today I saw a new Torchy’s Taco sign being raised. Just at the intersection of Mesa and Spicewood Springs by the fire house. I checked their website and they haven’t even announced it yet – but photos were being taken so I’m sure it will be up soon.

This is all I know – I have no idea when the new location will open – but you heard it here first folks <insert car salesman>.

The city of Sunset Valley met earlier this month to determine and vote on a new location. If all goes well the market’s new home will be just north of where they are now in a city lot along US 290. The market owners don’t seem to be worried, they feel the new space is larger and could be a more permanent solution. However, many vendors are sad to say goodbye to the original location and worry that the new location won’t have enough parking nor be as easy to get in an out.

The market is a great weekend spot for Austinites. Around 170,000 people shop at the market each year. It provides a variety of goods from fresh baked bread to produce to jewelry and art.

At last we were given an answer when President Obama signed into law an extension of the $8,000 credit and then went one step further by extending it to existing home owners*.

As a home owner or a home buyer how does this extension and expansion affect you? Below are some quick facts about the law that may help clear up some of those question marks in your head.

Many of the guidelines for the new home buyer tax credit are the same as the previous one.
Here are a few of the key changes:

• Taxpayers must be in an executed contract to close, before midnight on April 30, 2010. The closing must occur before midnight on June 30, 2010.
• *Previous homeowner’s who fall within the income limits and other qualifying guidelines will be eligible for the $6,500 tax credit.  This includes buyers who are already under contract but does not include those who have already closed.
• The maximum home price is capped at $800,000.
• Under the bill, income limits are expanded to $125,000 for individuals and $225,000 for joint filers. Individuals with incomes up to $145,000 and joint filers with incomes up to $245,000 qualify for reduced credits.
• Taxpayers can claim the credit on their 2009 income tax return for purchases made in 2010.
• Due to issues with fraud, taxpayers will now need to provide a settlement statement from closing before the IRS will release the credit.

*$6,500 tax credit for repeat buyers if they’ve lived in their current home for five of the past eight years.

The reason these statistics were staggering to me is I along with most really never gave much thought to what mowing my lawn was doing to the environment. And I never stopped to think of how much gasoline, which is becoming a valuable resource, uses.
